Karina: Life without music is.. Empty!
Composing song is a hobby of this girl—born in July 29—which she has been doing since at the 2nd degree of SMP (Junior Hi-School). And now, although she is now living afar from her home, Karina Parashati is still productive in composing song. Now, the student of Edmonds Community College is in busy of offering her works to a numerous labels in Indonesia, and admits of not intended yet to distribute her works to the city where she lives now, Seattle, USA. Following is uncluster.com interview with Karina.
Hello.
Hello too.
What is your activity nowadays?
Currently, here (Seattle) I am taking a job while looking forward to the new school to be started in January. I returned to Jakarta few days ago for leisure. As I did it in the middle of fall quarter, so I have to wait for the subsequent quarter to be enrolled again.
Taken from info that we got earlier (hehe) you like to compose song. Usually, from where did you get inspiration to compose song?
Unfortunately, I got it from boys. Hahaha.
Hahaha. Have you ever published it?
Yep, actually there was one, released in last February. I helped the writing of lyrics of the OST “Kirun+Adul Pengen Punya Pacar Keren”, which is entitled ‘Leadership’, it was featuring Lifter. Other one was a song I have been asked for a country compilation.
Actually, what is the music genre that you chose?
I prefer acoustic style, but few days ago when I was in Jakarta, I did a mastering for a full band, so it was becoming a pop. Hehe
Is there Indonesian song you are listening to nowadays?
Hm…There is one I keep on replaying it today; it is Dewiq’s ‘Happy Ending’. But, for sure, it will be changed tomorrow. I sometimes prefer old songs too.
Do you have plan for those works you have done? To be compiled into a full album or mini album?
I have made an acoustic demo few days ago, and I tried to offer it to some labels in Indonesia, but they said that making an album in current time is outdated. So, before I left Indonesia I had chance to make masters of 3 songs, a mini album, so I made them to be entirely single.
Is there any label keen on your works already?
Hhhmmm. They just preferred two of them, but they were still a bedroom acoustic, I haven’t tried the masters, as it is still in mixing process.
Don’t you want to try to distribute them in US?
Wow, I have never dream about it, perhaps I had before hehe.
Is there any influence for your music regarding that you are now living in Seattle? It was a city of music, isn’t it?
Hhmmm. It is just because Seattle is very quiet and depressing, so I had a lot of time for myself, so I’d be more productive. Whenever somebody is dream, and got nothing to do, she/he might turn out brilliant ideas hehehe.
Do you have any comment on Seattle musicians?
Yup, since they lived in Seattle, so the music style is unique, the atmosphere out here is very depressing, rain all the time, restful and ease. As if ‘Twilight’, that is why I cannot watch ‘Twilight’, as it can make me more depressed hahahaha.
Since you like Nirvana, can you give a comment about this band? Which side do you like about their music or about the personnel themselves?
Wow..Their music is really everlasting, primarily ‘Smells Like Teen Spirits’, it’s my favorite. The lyric is very imaginative. Just see the lyrics of refrain part of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
Does the band influence your music?
If it is all about influence in composing song, I myself quite confuse about it. It doesn’t seem influence mine. Indeed, that coincidentally I frequently observe other artists’ songs, from slow up to screaming one hehe. For info, the song I made for the soundtrack is extremely different than those I compose myself. There is a pop one, the other is mellow, and another one is screaming hehehe. My band here is very jazzy, we played Bossanova, we’re kind of chameleon, be adapted to the situation. Hehehe.
So, you have a band there? Which one that really represents your music taste?
I love to run all of them. Just like when I listen to music, in accordance with my mood hehehe, I can feel everything. However, the one I do thoroughly is that which I do them by myself.
It is Rads. I have once made a duet with Delon (1st edition Indonesian Idol winner-ed) when he visited here hahaha.
What kind of songs do you prefer most to perform?
We had once performed songs of Norah Jones, Michael Bubble, Kelly Sweet, but recently we performed Indonesia old tracks, such as of Utha Likumahua, Reza or Vina Panduwinata.
Can you name five of your favorite songs?
Love Song (whoever sing it; 311, The Cure, Tori Amos), The Way You Look Tonight (whoever sing it; Tonny Benet, Frank Sinatra), Dendam (Cokelat), Don’t Go Away (Oasis), and I Ddon’t Wanna Stop (ATB).
Whenever you listen to a song, which one do you most observe; music or the lyric?
It would be both of them. Talking about music; it is quite difficult to find geniuses’ works, such as trance style. For instance is Bjork, her song made us eager to observe the details, or songs of Coldplay, U2, or Muse. Talking about lyrics, The Killers’ works are fanciful, Perfect Circle, Slipknot, they are imaginative but contains deep meanings, rich. I had Killers’ works in my mind, ‘Human’ or ’3 Libras’ (Perfect Circle).
What is on your mind on time when you heard the word of music?
Life, mood changing and soundtrack of life. Life without music is empty.
OK, Thank you Karina.
Ok.
