Gania, The Supergirl
There shall be no many females chose to be a vocalist of punk band. Gania Alianda is an exception. Student of Widyatama University, majoring in Graphic Design chose to join Billfold, a punk/hardcore band. A few weeks ago, uncluster.com interviewed Gania at Lucky Peter Tattoo Studio, a studio within Dago area, Bandung. Following are our relaxing conversation with Gania; about her band, past and future.
Hello Gania, what are you doing now?
Hello. I am now busy by my lecture, as UAS (Final Semester Examination) is underway.
When did you start to love singing?
Wow, it is a long story. At the very first time, it was when I was in Junior High School, when I started to found a band. I continued it in High School, in which, finally at the 2nd grade of High School I was asked to be a featured vocally by Rosemary, to sing Supergirl. From that moment, I started to be serious, since public response to Supergirl was quite acceptable, and then many bands asked me to found a band, but finally I felt compatible with Billfold as I decided to join them.
Why did you choose to be a vocalist of punk band?
I’m not sure. Earlier, I was asked to be a soloist, I had once about to join a major label too, but I thought that was not my tendency. To be honest, I am not a kind of vocalist like Bunga Citra Lestari for instance, hahaha. Before I decided to be a vocalist, I was once a bassist of a hardcore band, with my elder brother, and then I do not understand why many friends asked me to join were those of underground bands. Since, I had never been in certain vocal course and even never planned to be like this.
You name (Gania) was started to be known as you sang “Supergirl” with Rosemary, can you tell us; how did the process of such collaboration?
Rosemary was a friend of my elder brother, and by chance I had frequently got along them. We played skateboard together and mingled. If I’m not wrong, the place we used to come to was 18th Park Jl.Riau, that was the place I was introduced to them (Rosemary). Afterwards, suddenly, I was asked to sing Supergirl, whilst they even had not heard me singing. So, I just tried then.
What about the story when you firstly joined Billfold?
Actually, I am the last personnel who joined Billfold. Then, the drummer of Billfold (Pam) had just exited from his earlier band, Sweet Punch for Kids, and he wanted to found another band, and the band was already founded but he still looked for a vocalist, so he called me. I feel compatible with their materials, so I decided to join the band.
What is your plan with Billfold?
Alhamdulillah, there are already parties asked us to perform, and it is planned we will produced an E.P. Insya Allah, it will be launched in July 2011, whilst we are now collecting materials for our next full album.
What is actually the inspiration for songs of Billfold?
We prefer our bio-environment, or all about leadership.
What does actually The Billfold’s song, Save Them to Save Us tell about?
That tells how we have to preserve our bio-environment. Nowadays, impacts of global warming are increasingly apparent, therefore we must save our environment, and we must save the environment to save our live. That is the song tells about.
If, anytime in the future, you got chance to make collaboration, then who would you like to collaborate with?
I would like to collaborate with Seringai, to mention those among locals, as I am crazy about Seringai. While those of foreign groups, I’d love to collaborate with H2O.
Would you name one of the most memorable live performances?
It was when we had 7 cities tour. Within 10 days we visited Yogyakarta, Semarang, Bali and few other cities. I thought Billfold was just popular in Bandung, but then I found there are many getting by heart the songs of Billfold.
What about the funniest occurrences when you were on stage?
It was when we had an event in Lembang, I was almost fallen over from the stage. Perhaps, I was a bit dizzy as I had not had my lunch. Similarly when we performed at Reneo Cafe, a fan gave a posy hahaha.
Do you have a role model concerning your style/ dress fashion?
There are a lot. I prefer Hayley Williams (Paramore), Broddy Dale (The Distillers), and Candace Kucsulain (Walls of Jericho).
In your opinion, who is the Indonesian qualified female singer?
There a lot too, but I would be a bit confused if I have to name one. As to the date, I do not have any single Indonesian singer that I’d like to be my role model, or there is yet no one whose I can say about her; “whoa this girl is very cool” hahaha. However, someday I would choose one.
Any quote you would like to say?
Being yourself, and do not ever be afraid of trying.
